Feel the Holiday stress coming?

Dear reader

It's coming up to that time of the year again. The holiday river of life can sweep you away from self-care and peace of mind. To maintain a healthy equilibrium it's time to hunker down and stay true to yourself.

One of my colleagues calls this season, “the trifecta of bad health”. There’s so much happening with Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. And on top of that add New Year’s Eve. What are all those holidays known for? Excess!! Too much sugar, alcohol, starch, fat, consumerism, family stress, and not finding time for self-care are the rules.

What can you do to avoid gaining weight, getting stressed, and losing your hard earned muscles and peace of mind?

Stephen Covey wrote a book called The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, many years ago. What I learned from that book is to put the “big rocks” in first. Big rocks are your highest values. Is one of your highest values your health? If not, it should be. Without your health it’s hard to do anything else isn’t it? Do yourself a favor, and take a couple of minutes to create your calendar for the end of the year. Write in time for yourself. 30 minutes, a day isn’t too much to treat yourself well is it? During that time, exercise, space out, have fun, meditate, etc.

Or take some tips from Dr. Dan Siegel, professor of medicine at UCLA. He has put together The Healthy Mind Platter. Take a look. All of these activities are necessary for your healthy mind, body and spirit.

Be kind to yourself!
